Weekly Community Extras
Washington, D.C.
Assignment >
At the end of each summer, the community extras ran a special section full of information for the coming school year. The editors needed something clever and creative yet generic enough it could run in all 12 community-specific zones. The Results > I like to think of this design as "Andy Warhol meets Any Kindergartner." Instead of an iconic Marilyn Monroe, I've repeated the image of the ubiquitous school bus, which is iconic in its own right. Each bus is rendered with different school supplies. I aimed for authenticity. I sketched a simple bus outline and then photocopied the resulting contour drawing. I basically created a coloring book, in which I scribbled and painted until I had appropriately child-like representations. For the middle bus, I used the contour drawing as a pattern, cutting and pasting layer after layer of construction paper. I scanned in my artwork and digitally added the crayons, scissors and palm print to the final design. To pull it all together, I wrote the headline, "Get out the school supplies and make room on the fridge, because it's time to go BACK TO SCHOOL."
